Hector Heathwood

Hector was born in Belfast and first started taking photographs there in the early eighties. His work being split between a documentary project on retired people and images of women within their own space.
Towards the end of that decade Hector attended Napier Polytechnic in Edinburgh where he gained a BA Degree in Photographic Studies in 1991. While at college he continued to work in a documentary way on a Sex and Gender project, bending college briefs to fit into his own work. Writing his thesis on Representation of Transexualism.
Hector had already started working on Sexual Roleplay, and fetish-related images formed part of his degree show. After a year in Edinburgh working as a freelance commercial photographer Hector moved to Dublin and continued working as a photographer while looking for work as a lecturer in the medium. He worked part-time as a lecturer at a variety of colleges before becoming Senior Lecturer in Photography at Griffith College Dublin where he still teaches.
Hector has exhibited work in Belfast, Edinburgh and Dublin. His show, entitled 'ONCE', in 2001, was Ireland's first fetish related photographic exhibit and he followed that with 'ONCE(again)' in 2003. Hector is working on a new exhibition to open later this year.
A list of titles where his work has been included include D/side, Patrick, IT (Irish Tatler), Amateur Photographer (twice in their Erotica Special), Darkroom User, The Irish Times,The Irish Star, Secret Fetish Photo Anthology, Jade and Shiny.
