IMPURE ART - EROTIC EXHIBITION May 10 – June 29
The most intriguing, thought provoking, sensual and just plain arousing erotic art. It’s what Brighton has been waiting for!
IMPURE ART - “A naughty little exhibition” - features over 30 local and international erotic artists on show in the heart of Brighton’s Lanes during the May Festival and beyond.
She Said, Brighton’s cult erotic boutique, in collaboration with celebrated erotic artist Jamie McCartney (of Brighton Body Casting) are hosting Brighton’s only erotic art exhibition of the entire festival. IMPURE ART will focus on art broadly described as ‘anything from nude to rude’. From sensual, feminine paintings, through humorous illustrations, saucy neon lights to spellbinding fetish photography and fine erotic jewellery, the exhibition’s self-imposed brief is to show top quality artworks which also fit the ‘impure’ remit.
The high standard of the work from established names, including Ray Leaning, Jamie McCartney, Don Grant and Eve Poland, and rising stars and hot new talent like Amanda Ward, Pearl Bates and recent graduate Andrew McAuley is what sets this show apart making it more “fur coat than dirty mac!”
IMPURE ART was conceived some time ago but when an ex-gallery space just two doors down from She Said became available it was too good an opportunity to pass up. Promoter of the show, Nic Ramsey, and owner of She Said explains, “Since we opened She Said in 2002 artists have been begging to display their work and customers have been asking where they can buy good sensual art. Regular galleries may be reticent to show erotic and explicit artworks but Brighton, with its saucy reputation, is the perfect place for our exhibition”.
Being one of the UK’s leading erotic artists and Brighton’s new enfant terrible, enlisting Jamie McCartney to curate the show was the natural choice. With his seafront studio at the JAG gallery on Madeira Drive, his explicit body castings have been causing quite a stir. Winner of the 2007 Erotic Signature International Sculpture Prize and runner-up in 2008, and with his work currently on show at the world famous Kinsey Institute of Sexual Research, Jamie is flavour of the month on both sides of the Atlantic. A member of both the Guild and Association of Erotic Artists (who have both endorsed IMPURE ART), Jamie is both well connected and well respected in the field and has pulled together a broad and impressive line up of talent.
A judge in last year’s Seeking Picasso Brighton art competition and art critic in his own right with his moniker of ‘Critical I’, Jamie was well qualified to help make the difficult decision of who was in and who was out. “With very high quality work submitted by over 60 artists, it was a mammoth task. We’ve even had to involve two adjacent shops to provide extra room for the exhibition.”
