Jack Purvis

Jack has been many things. Salesman, Soldier, Ballet and Stage Dancer, Statistician, Negotiator, Personnel Manager, HR Director for a major international construction company, and, latterly worked for an Association of Manufacturing Companies. He is reducing his work role with a view to retirement and total involvement in painting, instead of his intermittent involvement over recent years.
The works he wants to paint are those of the face and figure, preferably feminine. To tell a story through his art is his ambition. His material might emerge from a piece of music, a film, a chance meeting in the street, or a book, one example being the ‘Story of ‘O’. The emphasis always upon ‘sensuality’.
He deeply regrets the years spent painting what others thought he should paint. Subjects which brought no vibrancy to his brush and canvas. He spent much time in ‘lifeless’ classes painting the static nude posed for the benefit of ten, twenty other participants. One beneficial discovery was the ‘erotic’ art workshops run by Association Co-founder Paul Woods in London.
He now enjoys regular one to one sessions with selected models. In recent months he has been fortunate in engaging two models who are not only highly professional and comfortable with their own bodies, but also act as inspiration. Sometimes he will invite an artist acquaintance along, and occasionally he runs small workshops on the face and figure.
Mainly he paints in oil, but with occasional excursions into pencil, charcoal and watercolour.
