James Reynard

Starting out as an idiosyncratic landscape photographer, James Reynard now focuses
primarily on sensual imagery. He is fascinated by the way that fantasy can interact
with and influence reality, denying the rational explanations that many people
crave for events. A passage of writing or music will often create a series of
mental pictures in the mind of the reader/listener - sometimes vague and sometimes
detailed - but away's very personal. The images are frequently incomplete -
they are sketches with blank or dark spaces in them. This notion informs much
of James' art, in particular his
ongoing multi-part project Dreams and Nightmares.
James' work tends to hint and suggest rather than depict explicitly. He leaves
room for the imagination to work - and not just one imagination, but many -
each viewer can bring a subtly unique interpretation to an image, and they are
all equally valid. That's not to say that the images are devoid of purpose;
each seeks to take you by the hand and lead you in a certain direction, but
somewhere along the way you'll find that you're no longer being lead, that you're
the one doing the leading. James believes this principal should apply to all
art - when the art critic states what a particular piece represents, you can
take their words as a guide, but value your own instincts and reactions too.
People are too often told what their opinions should be and easily forget that
all censorship is political. The only true freedom is to think for yourself.
James was educated at the University of Essex, earning a Bachelor’s degree
in English and European Literature and a Master’s degree in Computer Studies.
He spent a decade working in The City, during which time he began to exhibit
his photography. Eventually, the passionate belief that people should endeavour
to live their dreams lead him to make photography his life. He is a founder
member of Lacuna Images, a fine art co-operative that evolved from his time
studying photography at The London College of Communication.
Based in Essex and London, James takes on commercial and private commissions, and is keen to collaborate with other artists and models. You can contact him by emailing: james@thesensualphoto.com
